The news media and in particular the alternative media all look to attract customers.

What research shows and what they all know, is that doom and disaster, salacious details and outrage all attract customers more effectively than reports of positive plans or outcomes.It's easy to get trapped in the cycle of despair, thinking that things are not as good as they once were and concerned about the trajectory of the future.

Therefore it was a great tonic to have as our guest speaker at our last meeting, Deanna Louis, a young doctor whose positive outlook and desire to make the world as a better place. There is a full report in the body of the Bulletin.

Deanna is not unique and that enthusiasm can be found across all ages and stages of our country and as an organisation we can and do add to that enthusiasm. We do that by funding those who need that hand up, by providing opportunities for many of our great young people to work together and for others and by working as an organisation to tackle those large world problems that cant be solved as individuals.

Inspirational talk

Study for a medical degree at the University of Auckland includes an option to complete 10 weeks of training overseas.

With the help of Rotary, Deanna Louis chose to spend that time involved with the Likoma Island Period Poverty Project in Malawi. Period Poverty is the lack of access to sanitary products due to financial constraints. Malawi is one of Africa’s poorest countries. Women lose wages when their periods prevent them from working and girls miss out on education if they cannot attend school.

Deanna spoke at our last meeting of the primitive facilities at her St Peters Hospital base on Likoma Island, a 52 bed in-patient care with one X-Ray machine that none of the staff knew how to use. But with the assistance of charity Medic to Medic, Deanna was able to distribute period packs for which she had raised over $2,500 and deliver education sessions at three different schools. Raising awareness, giving first aid and motivational talks, developing leadership skills and dealing with equity and access issues were all part of the help she provided and understanding and knowledge she gained. She hopes to return at some stage to different areas of Malawi to use her education to assist further.

Club Assembly

Past president Govind Pani delivered his annual report at our recent meeting and listed an impressive range of activities which the Club had undertaken during the year.

Highlights included the River Carnival, Diwali evening and golf tournament, all of which raised significant amounts, the completion of the walkway sculpture, and the reintroduction of trivia night, rotary student exchange, Holyoake Debate and community service awards.

Govind spoke of the collaboration with other clubs and the hope of establishing a new Rotaract Club. We provided funding support to amongst others St. Johns Ambulance, Life Education Trust, Motor Neurone Disease Foundation, Period Poverty Malawi and Dictionaries in Schools.

The Past President offered special thanks to his Board, Ian Handisides and of course stalwart Dennis Kavanagh.
